About Keala Stevens

San Diego Coastal Photographer Specializing in Dogs and Their Humans

How it All Began

Animals have always made sense to me in a way people sometimes didn't. From the time I was a kid, they just — got me. And I got them. That connection shaped how I showed up for them.

I remember sitting outside in a rainstorm with a cat that wasn't even mine — just because she'd been left out in the wet and needed someone to stay with her. I was that person then. I'm still that person now.

What I do today is an extension of that compassion I've carried my whole life. Photography is how I share the love I see between you and the poeple or animals you love — so you have something to look back on long after the moment is gone.

What I Look For Through the Lens

The moment I'm waiting for is the one where I disappear.

When you stop noticing the camera. When the moment takes over. When all you see is each other.

That's when a photo becomes a portrait. Whether it's a couple locking eyes, a family dissolving into laughter, or a dog looking up at their whole world — I'm watching for that shift. The moment connection takes over.

When Connection is Revealed Most

Some of the most meaningful sessions I photograph are Legacy portraits — quiet, unhurried time with a dog whose season is changing. No rush. No pressure. Just presence, for dogs who are quite honestly the best part of our lives.

Where Everything Falls Away

The coast has a way of simplifying things. There’s nothing artificial to distract from what matters. Just the tides, the light, and the open horizon.

Something shifts when we step near the water. A lightness takes over. Shoulders soften. Laughter comes easily. And when everything else falls away, what remains is real.

That’s where the magic lives — I just show up and let the coast do half my job.

A Commitment

Beyond Photography

This work has never been just about creating beautiful images. It’s about honoring the lives and relationships that make those images matter in the first place.

The same compassion that shaped who I was as a child shapes how I show up today — and why I donate 2% of every product sale to organizations that protect animals and preserve the coast.

Because preserving what matters and protecting it have always gone hand in hand. Being trusted with that responsibility is the greatest honor of my work.

Keala is internationally recognized for excellence in dog and human portraiture. Off the clock you'll find her hiking North County trails and beaches with her two adopted Beagles — busy keeping them out of trouble and often heard hollering, 'What is that in your mouth?!!'
